The challenge
Why Hong Kong banks reject so many new companies
Hong Kong's banks are world-class — and under strict anti-money-laundering supervision. They decline applications not because the business is bad, but because the application doesn't answer their questions clearly. We have seen every reason for rejection, and we build your application to avoid them.
Unclear business model
Vague descriptions, no website, no contracts or invoices — the bank cannot see where the money will come from.
No Asia connection
Suppliers, customers or operations with no link to Hong Kong or the region make banks ask "why here?".
High-risk flags
Certain industries, countries and complex ownership structures trigger enhanced due diligence — or an automatic decline at some banks.
Incomplete documents
Missing proof of address, unsigned resolutions, inconsistent information across forms — easy to avoid, fatal if not.
Poor interview
Directors who can't explain their own business, expected volumes or counterparties rarely pass the KYC meeting.
Wrong bank
Every bank has a different appetite. Applying to the wrong one wastes weeks — and a rejection is visible to the next bank.

Traditional banks vs. fintech — which is right for you?

FAQ
Hong Kong business bank accounts — frequently asked questions
Yes. There is no legal restriction on non-resident directors or shareholders. What matters to the bank is a clear, legitimate business with verifiable counterparties, a plausible reason to bank in Hong Kong, and complete documentation. Thousands of foreign-owned Hong Kong companies open accounts every year — the key is choosing the right institution and preparing properly.
Not always. Fintech providers like Airwallex, Statrys and Currenxie onboard entirely online with video verification. Among traditional banks, some accept remote interviews for lower-risk profiles or through overseas branches; others still require a director to visit. If a visit is needed, we schedule the appointment, prepare you and can accompany you.
Fintech accounts: typically 3–10 business days. Traditional banks: 2–6 weeks from submission of a complete application, including the interview and compliance review. Complex ownership structures or high-risk industries take longer. We give you a realistic estimate at the pre-screening stage.
Banks rarely explain refusals, which is why pre-screening matters. If a rejection happens despite preparation, we analyse the likely cause, adjust the profile or documentation, and submit to the back-up institution identified at the start. Our support continues until you have a working account.
Yes. Many clients come to us for a second account — to add currencies, reduce fees, obtain cards or diversify risk. Existing companies with a trading history and audited accounts usually have a smoother path. We offer the banking service standalone for companies we did not incorporate.
Licensed fintech providers in Hong Kong hold a Money Service Operator or Stored Value Facility licence and must safeguard client funds in segregated accounts at licensed banks. They are not covered by the Deposit Protection Scheme (except licensed virtual banks). For large balances we recommend keeping a traditional bank account alongside.
